How does ecological restoration over a vast rural landscape work?

AABR members are invited to join North Sydney Bushcare in the annual tree-planting weekend in Boorowa, south-west NSW.

Boorowa Tree Planting Weekend – Friday 26 May to Sunday 28 May 2023.

Now in its 24th year, “Building Bridges to Boorowa” is an award-winning urban-rural partnership project that has seen over 80,000 trees planted by northern Sydney volunteers, together with our amazing partners Boorowa Community Landcare Group and Hilltops Council.

Volunteers are provided with free transport to Boorowa, several delicious country meals, as well as all tools, training and equipment required to plant 4,000 local native tubestock plants in specially prepared sites.

Boorowa and Burrowa in the Wiradjuri language mean “birds”. For good reason, many birds include the large, green Superb Parrot Polytelis swainsonii now listed as Vulnerable. They drink early morning and again in the evening, so take binoculars.

Superb Parrots feed on a range of plant species, grass seeds mostly on the ground, but also in trees, on wattles, mistletoes, dwarf cherry, and lerps taken from eucalypt foliage.  When making local foraging movements, birds usually move along wooded corridors, rarely crossing large areas of open ground. So, what will you be planting this year? Read the Superb parrot Recovery Plan here.
