Cook’s River naturalisation, Sydney :: Dan Cunningham :: Seminar 2014

Dan Cunningham from Sydney Water describes the reconstruction of ‘one of the most polluted waterways in Australia’, Cooks River, west of Sydney airport. An alternative to reconcreting was proposed to a highly engaged community that involved renewal of trapezoid concrete channels to regraded and naturalised vegetated banks. A great example of a paradigm shift in [...]

Reconstruction of native plant communities on rock dumps in Kosciuszko :: Elizabeth MacPhee :: Seminar 2014

Reconstruction of native plant communities on rock dumps in Kosciusko National Park explores the process of redressing the impacts of 400 disturbed sites that were created during the construction of the Snowy Hydro scheme, a $1,548,443 project. Elizabeth MacPhee talks through the logistics and the process of reshaping steep rock dumps, organic enhancement with scavenged [...]

Helping Saltmarsh Recover in the Hunter River Estuary, NSW :: Peggy Svoboda :: Seminar 2014

Peggy Svoboda has been helping Saltmarsh to recover on the Hunter River Estuary near Newcastle in NSW. This video outlines the significant benefits of the restoration project as a Ramsar site of significance for migratory shorebirds and the process of constructing saltmarsh communities. Contouring of the landscape, Juncus acutus removal and riparian restoration in the [...]

Large scale reconstruction of semi-arid ecosystems in south-west Western Australia :: Justin Jonson :: Seminar 2014

This video describes a landscape scale project, Gondwana link, which aims to connect a fragmented landscape in Western Australia from the wet forests to the deserts. The process of gathering information to build a picture of the landscape vegetation communities and the continuous improvement cycle which saw the on-ground restoration delivered in ‘broad brush strokes [...]

Restoration, Regeneration and Resilience in the tropics :: Nigel Tucker :: Seminar 2014

If you want to be inspired by the regenerative capacity of nature, Nigel Tucker’s talk reflecting on his lifelong observations and monitored project outcomes is the video for you. The role of disturbance and dispersal is discussed in the context of regeneration and resilience using the example of a 300km pipeline in PNG. The effects [...]

Scaling Up Restoration

In order to provide corridors of connectivity for fauna habitat needs and the ability for flora to migrate as a response to climate change and landscape fragmentation, large-scale linkage partnership projects have been Scaling Up. The worksheets explore landscape scale projects that are being implemented and provide numerous examples and links to further information to explore the topic with reference to the National Restoration Standards.

Seed and plant production areas & genetic issues

These resources explore the issues around species selection and provenance within the context of a fragmented landscape in a climate-changing world. The fact sheet provides a summary of Principles 1 and 3 and Appendix 3 from the National Restoration Standards. The student worksheets investigate establishing seed production facilities and provenance selection to optimise species’ resilience.

Appropriate approaches

These resources explore Principle 2 of the Standards and identifying the appropriate ecological restoration approach. The fact sheet discusses how site resilience is assessed and the obstacles to recovery that need to be considered in choosing a restoration approach. The worksheet requires students to explore a local site and conduct a resilience assessment as well as deepening their understanding of why certain approaches are undertaken through video case studies.
